Trujillo and Chiclayo (The Moche Route)

The northern coastal area of Peru is often called the Moche Route because the Moche people flourished there from roughly 100-800AD. While time and weather have taken their toll on the adobe structures created by this great pre-Incan civilization, visitors can still see the partial remains of many impressive structures such as Huaca de la Luna and El Brujo. In addition, two other famous pre-Incan adobe structures, Chan Chan and Tucume, also lie in this region.

Besides the many archeological wonders, visitors are also drawn to the town of Huanchaco (outside Trujillo) – which is known for its surfing, “caballitos de totora” or reed watercrafts (picture on the left) that are used by the local fishermen and delicious ceviche.

Chiclayo and Trujillo are the centerpiece of one of our newest itineraries – the Moche Route!

Moche Route – This 7 day trip includes a city tour of Lima and then continues up the coast to Trujillo and Chiclayo where we visit many of the architectural wonders of the Moche civilization.

Best time of year to visit
Trujillo is known as La Ciudad de la Eterna Primavera (The City of Eternal Spring), because of its sunny and pleasant weather year-round – so feel free to visit Trujillo (and nearby Chiclayo) all year!

Weather
Trujillo and Chiclayo have dry climates with an average temperature of about 21°C (70°F). The summers can reach temperatures over 32°C (90°F) and the winters are never colder than 14°C (57°F). The only time it rains is in the winter (December – March), but even then, it only rains a few millimeters at a time.

Transportation to Chiclayo and Trujillo
LAN and StarPeru both offer daily flights to both Chilayo and Trujillo. LAN has direct flights and tends to be more reliable, but you will pay about twice as much for a ticket. For those on a budget, StarPeru has one flight that services both destination (it stops in Trujillo on its way to and from Chiclayo) which is often significantly cheaper than LAN. The flight to Trujillo is about an hour and to Chiclayo (1.5 hours on LAN and 2+ hours on StarPeru).

Another popular option is the 9 hours bus ride to Trujillo or 12 hour ride to Chiclayo – with comfortable overnight options.
